چکیده

Submitted for the MAR09 Meeting of The American Physical Society Molecular dynamics study of the phase transition in the bcc metal nanoparticles YASUSHI SHIBUTA, TOSHIO SUZUKI, The University of Tokyo — The phase transition between liquid and solid phases in bcc metal nanoparticles was investigated using a molecular dynamics simulation. The nucleation from an undercooled liquid droplet was observed during cooling in all nanoparticles considered. A nucleus was generated near one side of the particle and solidification spread toward the other side the during nucleation process. On the other hand, the surface melting and subsequent inward melting of the solid core of the nanoparticles were observed during heating. The depression of the melting point was proportional to the inverse of the particle radius due to the Gibbs–Thomson effect [1]. However, the depression of the nucleation temperature during cooling was not monotonic with respect to the particle radius since the nucleation from an undercooled liquid depends on the event probability of an embryo or a nucleus. Phase transformations and segregation in Fe–Ni alloys and nanoalloys

Ordering and segregation properties of Fe–Ni alloys and nanoalloys are investigated by means of Metropolis Monte Carlo (MMC) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The model is based on an embedded atom potential which, according to thermodynamic integration, only stabilizes those phases that are observed experimentally. This stability is confirmed by MMC and the same phases are found stable ...

Molecular dynamics study of melting of a bcc metal - vanadium I : mechanical melting

We present molecular dynamics simulations of the homogeneous (mechanical) melting transition of a bcc metal, vanadium. We study both the nominally perfect crystal as well as one that includes point defects. According to the Born criterion, a solid cannot be expanded above a critical volume, at which a ’rigidity catastrophe’ occurs. This catastrophe is caused by the vanishing of the elastic shea...

Molecular dynamics studies on the denaturation of polyalanine in the presence of guanidinium chloride at low concentration

Molecular dynamic simulation is a powerful method that monitors all variations in the atomic level in explicit solvent. By this method we can calculate many chemical and biochemical properties of large scale biological systems. In this work all-atom molecular dynamics simulation of polyalanine (PA) was investigated in the presence of 0.224, 0.448, 0.673, 0.897 and 1.122 M of guanidinium chlorid...

Atomic Insights into the Melting Behavior of Metallic Nano-catalysts

In the present study, molecular dynamics simulations have been utilized to provide fundamental understanding of melting behavior of pure Pd and Pt nanoparticles with the size of 10 nm in diameter, both free and graphene-supported during continuous heating. The embedded atom method is employed to model the metal-metal interactions, whereas a Lennard-Jones potential is applied to describe the met...
